Spring Cleaning Means Energy Savings

Spring Cleaning Means Energy Savings

In Texas, spring can yield some hot temperatures. Many Texans are already pumping up the A/C, which can increase energy costs. The good news is, spring is the perfect time of the year to give your home a deep clean. Spring cleaning not only makes your home feel new again, but it can also help you reduce your energy usage! Take the time now to ensure that your home is running efficiently before the hottest temperatures of the year arrive this summer with these energy-saving spring cleaning tips:

Redirect your ceiling fans. During warmer months, your ceiling fans should be directed counterclockwise in order to properly cool a room. If your fans are spinning clockwise, then they are pushing warm air down. All you need to do to change the direction is to flip the switch that is usually on the side of your fan. Cleaning your ceilings fans and ensuring they’re spinning in the right direction can help reduce how long you need to run your air conditioning.

Change air-conditioning filters. Changing your air filters regularly not only improves the air quality in your home, but it also ensures that your HVAC system is running efficiently.

Tune your A/C. Even if you change your filters regularly, there are other issues that could cause your system to run inefficiently, such as low coolant levels. Have a professional maintenance technician check it before summer to keep your system running well all summer long.

Seal air leaks. This may sound like a daunting task, but it’s easier than you think to seal a few air leaks. You can buy weather stripping and other specialty kits that allow you to easily seal up any air leaks you might find while cleaning around your home.

Vacuum refrigerator coils. Dust builds up on refrigerator coils, making the fridge work harder than it should to stay cold. All you need to do is take the hose on your vacuum and suck it up!

Install a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat works well to help control cooling costs. If you don’t have one yet, then you need one.
