Energy Saving Tips for Renters

Summer is heating up, and you know what that means—the A/C is running nonstop! Even when you’re renting, you can make changes around your home and in your daily routine to save energy. Making even small changes can help reduce your electricity bill. Here are a few energy-saving tips that are a must for renters:

1. Replace most frequently used lights.
Lighting is the one of the easiest areas to make changes. Start by making a list of the most frequently used lights in your home, then replace the top ones with fluorescent, or CFL, light bulbs. Replacing five lights can save you $65 per year in energy costs, and CFL bulbs last 6–10 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs.

2. Use a programmable thermostat.
Many landlords allow tenants to install a programmable thermostat. These automatically adjust your home’s temperature settings as needed. If used correctly, a programmable thermostat can save up to $150 per year in energy costs.

3. Unplug electronics.
Electronics now count for an average of 15 percent of household electricity use. Some of this energy usage occurs even when your electronics are turned off. To minimize electricity usage from electronics, always unplug any battery chargers or power adapters when not in use. This includes your cell phone charger! In areas with multiple electronics, use a power strip for convenience.

4. Opt for a shower instead.
According to Energy Star, a ten-minute shower can use less water than a full bath. Ask your landlord to replace your showerhead with a new, low-flow shower head, which will save you an average of five gallons of water each time you shower. Low-flow showerheads also save energy by placing less strain on your water heater. You can save up to $145 each year!

5. Wash clothes in cold water.
Did you know that 90 percent of the energy your machine uses to wash clothes is from using hot water? Only 10 percent goes to the electricity used by the washer motor. Unless your clothes are very soiled or stained, cold water will be just as effective in cleaning your laundry.
